Changing Townscape

Now that An Lanntair has been offically opened by First Minister Jack McConnell and is becoming an integral part of Stornoway life, attention turns to other developments in the town.

The redevelopment of the Old Sail Loft, and the adjacent Commercial Hotel to produce high quality housing began in summer 2004, under the auspices of the Highland Buildings Preservation Trust and Historic Scotland, and now nears completion. These buildings had lain in neglect and disrepair for many years, belying their earlier importance in the development of Stornoway and the growth of trade since at least the early 19th century. With stunning views over the harbour to Lews Castle and out to Bayhead, there will be much interest in the finished property, which incorporates many original features.

Meanwhile, in the Castle Grounds, the water wheel continues to generate electricity and attract visitors, and the refurbishment of the Matheson monument will see it once more an attractive landmark for locals and visitors alike. The monument was erected in 1896 by Lady Matheson to her husband Sir James Matheson who had died in 1878 in the south of France. Over the years, it had degenerated into a dingy black, graffiti-covered target for vandals, but, under the auspices of Stornoway Trust and the Stornoway Amenity Trust, it is now being restored to its former pristine white, although the statute has unfortunately lost her arms. The area around the monument is landscaped, with seating to enable walkers to rest and appreciate the view of the town.
